Denys Baptiste - Jazz Musician on Come and Play

Jazz musician, Denys Baptiste believes music plays a significant part in the developing self confidence and self esteem in children, and research has shown that these two important life skills are nurtured in the children who take part in the music making prgramme - Come and Play.

Eleven thousand children, aged from 4-14 years of age, will take part in Come and Play in out of school clubs and holiday play schemes throughout England. The initiative began in March 2003 and will continue until the end of 2005 and the children who take part, are involved in vibrant and creative workshops led by experienced musicians, giving them an opportunity to learn about music in a fun and creative out of school setting.

“As a teenager, my love of music helped me to stand out amongst my peers. It also improved my confidence and my ability to believe in my ideas, ultimately helping me to become self-motivated”, said Denys Baptiste.

Denys’ interest in music developed from an early age and at 7 years of age, he decided he wanted to play a music instrument. As Denys’ parents were not able to afford an instrument, it was not until Denys attended secondary school that the world of music was opened up to him and he began playing the clarinet.

“My school helped me immensely as they had instruments available to all the students. I had a great music teacher who would allow me to practice during my breaks between classes, but the most valuable help that my school gave me was just to let me get on with it and explore”, said Denys.

Exploring music is one of the key components of Come and Play, which is run by the charity 4Children and funded by Youth Music. The children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, are given exposure to a variety of musical activities and instruments at the workshops and many of these children have had no previous music experience.

Music has changed Denys’ life as he has been able to write and record his own music, whilst travelling the world and playing with great musicians to thousands of people.

“Children should have access to music as it can change and improve their lives. Come and Play is giving so many children from different walks of life valuable access to music out of school in fun environments, which can only benefit their lives”, said Denys.
