1. Resource Material Recommendations

Several of the Come and Play partners have asked us for recommendations for other resource material. Song and Game books and CDs are helpful tools that playworkers can use to structure music activities. Here are some suggestions that our music partners have made:

• The Bang On! CD is a great CD for kids to play along to, dance to and even make up words/raps to. The kids love it and it doesn’t have inappropriate lyrics etc. Contact Katie on 07974910834 or order online at www.bangon.net.
• There is a series called Music Express published by AC Black - www.acblack.com. The Music Express Song Books for KS 1 and KS2 have accompanying CDs and are fantastic. They also put out class curriculum books for each year but schools often use these so be aware that the material may overlap. The song books are a better idea and have good material particularly for the older children who can be the hardest to find new exciting resources for.
• First Notes Resource Pack produced by soundLINCS is a very comprehensive kit that contains musical activities and other resources for early years.

• www.lmsmusicsupplies.co.uk is a good site worth looking at for instruments and resources
• Other Activity books recommended to us by music workshop leaders are: The Rainbow Fish Interactive Storybook by Dorling Kindersley Ltd and Tanka Tanka Skunk by Steve Webb (Random House) – Both are available on Amazon.co.uk

2. Funding Opportunities
Following the end of the Come and Play programme in your area many of you may be faced with the question “How do I keep the music going in the out of school clubs?” Sourcing the finances for a large scale programme may seem like a daunting prospect but as successful partners in the past have demonstrated, by securing funding and developing good relationships with your music partners, the staff and children in your clubs can really benefit in the long run!

3. Good News!
The Come and Play partners in Doncaster (2004 participants) are committed to building on the great work they achieved last year. Doncaster Community Arts (DARTS) have joined forces with Playnet and with support from the local authority they are working towards a second phase of the programme. As a follow on to last years Come and Play project, Doncaster Arts are running a project involving 6 out of school clubs aptly titled "You can come and play 2" The focus of this project is on training play-workers to deliver their own musical activities and runs until the end of the year.
DARTS recently received confirmation that their Youth Music bid was successful and Playnet is currently awaiting a response from Trusthouse Charitable Foundation.
Congratulations Doncaster!

The after school club at Millfields school in Hackney is continuing to with the musicians from Musiko Musika. Rachel and Mauricico first worked with the children and playworkers on the Come and Play programme in 2004. A grant from Youth Music has helped fund an 18 month project at Millfields and another school in Hackney.
Congratulations Millfields and Musiko Musika!

4. Resource Pack Training
The Come and Play resource pack has now been distributed to all of the Come and Play clubs from 2003 and 2004. We are glad to report that 24 partners went on to run specific training sessions for playworkers on the pack with the help of their music providers.
80 more clubs across the country also got the opportunity to attend training and received a resource pack from their Come and Play local authority and for many of them this is the first time music activities have been introduced into their clubs.
The Come and Play team has sent out questionnaires to all the clubs in order to gauge how the playworkers are finding the packs and we would appreciate your help in gathering this information. We want to see how the clubs are using the pack and if there are any ways that we can improve it.
Thanks for your cooperation!

5. Membership
Did you know you can help out of school clubs in your area by facilitating a group membership on their behalf? We have lots of members throughout the country but we also have some non members who are missing out on the generous benefits of 4Children membership. Our research shows that member clubs are more likely to be sustainable, more likely to be quality assured and more likely to have staff with enhanced qualifications.

In addition to this members will receive all the normal benefits of club membership including a discount on insurance with Morton Michel which can save clubs around £30.00. Within the group scheme local authorities can enlist as many clubs into membership as they like for just £22.50. If you would be interested in facilitating a group membership for providers in your area please contact the Information and Membership Helpline on 020 75122100

6. A New Staff Member
David Moss has taken over as Arts Development Manager. His aim in this role is to help support further arts and music development in your out of school clubs and playschemes. You can contact David directly at David.Moss@4Children.org.uk
