Instruments and music are now a firm favourite with the children attending the Holy Souls Out of School Club in Birmingham due to the music making programme Come and Play, which is being run at the club.
Aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, Come and Play provides children who have had little access to music making out of school hours, with a unique opportunity to learn about the different aspects of music through creative and informal workshops, led by experienced musicians.
This is the first year the programme has been run at the club and with the support of the Birmingham Playcare Network, the club has been able to buy instruments and take part in the workshops with the musicians, who have inspired the children to learn about the different aspects of music.
The 24 children who attend the club followed up the workshops by creating instruments from paper and taking part in music sessions by singing and playing instruments.
Sharon Ireland, Co-ordinator at the Holy Souls Out of School Clubs said, “Music is a good form of expression for the children as it allows them to let off steam whilst enabling them to be creative. The Come and Play programme has been a great success as it has cost us nothing, except one day of our time to learn how to run the programme, yet the returns have been truly amazing for the children. I would thoroughly recommend the programme to any other club – it is fantastic”.
Peter Garden, Head of Programmes at 4Chidlren said, “Come and Play is run by the national charity, 4Children and supported by Youth Music, and we are delighted that the programme is now being extended to other clubs throughout England including Birmingham , giving even more children, including those from disadvantaged areas, an opportunity to enjoy and learn about music”.
